The Byzantine City of Mystras is one of Greece’s most significant historical sites, located near Sparta in Laconia. History of Mystras

Mystras was founded in 1249 by the Frankish ruler William II of Villehardouin. In 1262, it was ceded to the Byzantines and became an important political, cultural, and religious center of the Byzantine Empire. During its peak in the 14th and 15th centuries, it was the seat of the Despotate of the Morea and a hub of art and scholarship.

After the fall of Constantinople in 1453, Mystras fell to the Ottomans and later experienced Venetian rule before being abandoned in the 19th century. Today, it stands as a monumental reminder of its glorious past.
